Charges pressed against Friosur for environmental breaches

The Superintendency of the Environment (SMA) pressed two charges against Pesquera Friosur SA due to environmental breaches in liquid waste treatment and monitoring systems in the treatment plant of RILes Pesquera Friosur, located in the town of Puerto Aysén of XI Region in Aysen.

The infringements that led to this decision were detected in scheduled environmental inspections conducted in 2013 and 2015. In these controls SMA professionals participated as well as Health Seremi officials, of the Directorate General of Maritime Territory and Marina Mercante (Directemar), and of the Maritime Authority of Aysen. All these institutions are part of the National Environmental Control Network (RENFA).

The inspections were aimed at various materials associated with the management and control of industrial liquid waste that is processed within Friosur Plant.

The first of the charges, which is minor, was pressed for not treating water-blood residues and process water in separate systems.

The second charge, qualified as very serious, is for not monitoring or sending the SMA the monitoring reports on Industrial Liquid Waste (ILW), of parameters and in the set sampling locations.

The SMA notes that the minor offenses may be subject to reprimand or fine of up to 1,000 Annual Tax Units (ATU), while the most serious infringements may be subject to revocation of the RCA, closure, or a fine of up to 10,000 ATU.

The charge pressure is the beginning of the sanction procedure by the SMA.

Friosur will now have 10 days to submit a Compliance Program and 15 days to formulate rebuttals to this Office, after which the sanction process continues.
