Fish farming by-products have the potential to increase the sustainability of aquaculture and contribute to other sectors such as food, diet supplements, animal feed and cosmetics, according to a new study.

Researchers from the University of Stirling’s Institute of Aquaculture found by-products, such as fish heads, frames, trimmings, skin and organs, are an underused resource that could be used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and even clothing.

After four years of joint work, six industrial fishing companies from the regions of Arica and Parinacota, Tarapacá, Antofagasta and Biobío achieved the certification of the Clean Production Agreement (APL) "Sustainable management of household waste in fishing vessels industrial”, articulated by the National Fisheries Society (Sonapesca), after accrediting a relevant advance in the reduction of solid waste generated, especially of plastic origin.

Union members employed by wellboat company Naviera Orca Chile have ended a 10-day strike over pay and conditions.

The Union of Officers of Crewmen of Naviera Orca Chile won some improvements but fell short of their main goals of a much-improved shift system and a wage rise to bring them on to the same pay level as the company’s most recent employees.

Olga Naumova has had a seat on the boards of RFC and Russian Crab since November 2019, and will continue in this role at Russian Crab.

Seafood businesses in Wales are being invited to submit applications to a £1m fund to primarily help mitigate the ongoing impact Covid-19 is having on the industry and adapt to the rapidly changing market conditions for seafood products.

The window of applications for grants from the European Maritime Fisheries Fund (EMFF) opened yesterday and runs until 25 March.

Seafarm, which produces turbot in the Netherlands, has become the first in the world to achieve the ASC Flatfish Standard certification.

Based in the province of Zeeland, Seafarm breeds turbot before selling them to a range of channels, including directly to consumers in their on-site restaurant.

Gross tonnage and engine power of vessels measure fishing capacity. After years of reducing it with the idea of adapting it to the possibilities of catches, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food declares that the Spanish last year was 22% less than the 423,550 tons and 20% less than the 964,826 kilowatt limit set by the European Union. With just over 7,800 operating vessels, it will continue to decrease because the incorporation of new units requires the addition of capacity, generally from the same census.
