One of the biggest privately owned salmon farmers in Norway has confirmed it is investing in Atlantic Sapphire’s Miami operations to diversify its business as the Norwegian Government’s introduction of a wealth tax on locally-owned companies has made it doubt its future in its homeland.

The Norwegian legislature raised wealth tax in the fall of 2021 as an economic measure but the chairman of the board of Nordlaks, Kjell Bjordal, sees it as unfair to locally-owned companies.

Salmon feed manufacturer BioMar has taken a swipe at rivals for their continuing trade with Russia following that country’s invasion of Ukraine.

BioMar announced higher sales volumes, revenue, and operating profits for the second quarter of 2022, and has raised earnings guidance for the year, but said it was still challenged by raw material prices, energy costs and the impact of suspending trade with Russia.

To compensate the Spanish fleet for the general rise in costs exacerbated by the war in Ukraine, the European Commission authorized Spain to distribute direct aid for a total of 18.18 million euros. Initially, the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food established a cap per company of 35,000 euros, with a minimum of 1,550, depending on the tonnage. It has just made public the list of those with more than one vessel that will receive an additional capital injection, with a cap per shipowner of 75,000 euros. If their owners do not object, they will receive another 471,000 in days.

BioMar Group and Síldarvinnslan have signed a memorandum of understanding to build a modern high-tech aquafeed production facility in Iceland.

The Icelandic aquaculture industry has grown tenfold since 2010 and prides itself on a sustainability focus and increased organic production at sea. The newer land-based projects are taking advantage of the natural environmental conditions to reduce resource requirements by utilising geothermal sources.

Norway’s first land-based salmon farmer throws in the towel.

“We are still in a start-up phase, but the figures for 2021 were still not satisfactory, Bernt Olav Røttingsnes, CEO of parent company Nordic Aquafarms Europe, told Fredrikstad Blad .

The turnover in Fredrikstad Seafoods increased from NOK 19.9 million (€2 million) to NOK 45.1 million (€4.6 million), but the deficit also increased: from NOK 41 million (€4.2 million) to NOK 61.5 million (€6.2 million) before tax.

New HMRC figures have shown that Scottish salmon is the UK’s biggest fresh food export but the sector is facing continued challenges following Covid and Brexit.

International sales of Scottish salmon were valued at £280million in the first half of 2022, with France accounting for more than half of the total. However, this was down by around 8 per cent compared to 2021, across both EU sales and non-EU sales.

Greenpeace announced that its ship Arctic Sunrise will be travelling to the South West Deeps MPA in the coming weeks. The MPA is located 200 miles off the Land’s End peninsula.

Fresh and frozen seafood sales continued their decline in U.S. supermarkets in July due to inflation and increased restaurant visits, but shelf-stable seafood sales rose as cost-conscious consumers look for ways to save money.

Frozen seafood sales dropped 7.4 percent during the month to USD 651 million (EUR 640 million). Fresh seafood fell even more, falling 9.9 percent to USD 638 million (EUR 627 million), according to new data from IRI and 210 Analytics.
