Steakholder Foods Ltd (formerly MeaTech 3D) has filed a provisional US patent application based on the formation of layers of crosslinked tissue, with the international deep-tech food company stating that this “breakthrough methodology achieves the characteristic tender flakiness of cooked fish”.
It advises that the structure is formed from several layers – to give the flaky texture with loose bonding between adjacent layers. This creates the unique structure of the fish.
The National Service of Fisheries Health (Sanipes) —an institution attached to the Peruvian Ministry of Production— has signed a mutual agreement on the safety of hydrobiological products with the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) of the Republic of Korea.
In 2022, 29 Peruvian firms exported 9,257 tons of hydrobiological products to the Korean market, mostly frozen and produced in 26 plants.
There are 210 fish-processing establishments distributed across Tumbes, Piura, Lambayeque, La Libertad, Ancash, Lima, Callao, Ica, Arequipa, Moquegua, and Tacna, which are registered on the Sanipes website to export to South Korea.
It should be noted that the main products exported to the Asian country last year were shrimps (Penaeus vannamei), giant squid (Dosidicus gigas), and frozen flying fish roe (Cheilopogon heterurus).
Vegan seafood company Boldly is entering the food scene with its calamari, shrimp, salmon and tuna sashimi offerings derived from konjac root vegetable.
The rapidly growing alternative seafood category is seeing another new entrant. Boldly, a new plant-based food brand, is announcing the upcoming launch of their line of 100 percent vegan seafood. The new product line will include calamari, salmon and tuna sashimi, shrimp, crab sticks and white fish filets. According to a news release, the brand plans to disrupt both the traditional and alternative seafood industry with food offerings that deliver on taste and texture and offer similar performance to conventional seafood.
Recognising that collisions with fishing vessels, cargo ships, cruise liners and whale-watching vessels are one of the greatest known threats to whales, dolphins and porpoises, the WCA-designed course supports commercial vessel operators by educating crews on how to avoid collisions with whales and dolphins. This, in turn, contributes to improving the safety of crew, passengers, vessels and the wider marine environment.
After several delays, the European Commission announced that as of February 20 it would present the action plan to protect marine biodiversity, the one that pursues the couplet that by 2030 30% of community waters are protected, 10% with a complete ban. But the document, at least in draft, has been leaked before, allowing shipowners to confirm that Brussels wants to expel all kinds of moving bottom gear from these marine protected areas.
The ban on trawling, as contained in that draft plan, would be gradual, so States should take steps to phase it out of existing marine protected areas (MPAs).

UK industry body Seafish has created a “Vessels of the Future Forum” help aquaculture vessels and fishing boats transition to net zero.
The newly formed forum brings together representatives from the fishing and the fish farming industry, boat builders and surveyors, ports and harbours, engine manufacturers, research community and governments.
It is being chaired by Mike Cohen, Deputy Chief Executive of the National Federation of Fishermen’s Organisations.

According to the sectoral monitoring system, over the past week, prices for frozen fish in the wholesale segment of the domestic market have been either decreasing or remaining stable.
In the Far East, prices for Pacific herring, flounder and pollock remained - 55 rubles, 68 rubles. and 80 rubles. per kg, respectively.
In the North-West, the price of Atlantic herring fell by almost 4% to 98 rubles. per kg. Haddock fell in price by 1.2% - to 163 rubles. per kg. The price for Atlantic cod and mackerel has not changed over the week - 250 rubles. and 165 rubles. per kg, respectively.
In the central regions, the wholesale price of the popular assortment of frozen fish remained at the level of the previous week. Atlantic mackerel was sold at a price of 165 rubles, pollock - 104 rubles, capelin - 95 rubles, Atlantic herring - 113 rubles. per kg.
The Salmon and Trout Export Report issued by the union also states that salmonids ceased to be the 2nd most exported product in the country, remaining in third place after lithium.
The Consejo del Salmón de Chile A.G. (which brings together the companies AquaChile, Australis, Cermaq, Mowi and Salmones Aysén, which together represent close to 52% of Chilean salmon production) prepares the "Salmon and Trout Export Report".
The report, which is prepared with information from the Central Bank and the National Customs Service, analyzes the end of the year 2022, and its main conclusion is that salmon and trout exports reached a total of 751,259 tons.
